How to Prevent Moisture and Water Ingress in Oil-Immersed Transformers
To ensure the safe operation of oil-immersed transformers, daily maintenance and care are crucial. Therefore, fire prevention, moisture protection, and waterproofing measures must be thoroughly implemented. Today, we will focus on moisture and water ingress prevention for oil-immersed transformers.
Moisture or water entering an oil-immersed transformer can severely damage the electrical and physical properties of the insulation medium. Thus, if moisture or water ingress is detected, the transformer should be dried promptly to prevent equipment damage and ensure the safe operation of the power system.
The main measures to prevent moisture and water ingress in oil-immersed transformers are as follows:
- Before refilling or replacing the oil, conduct oil tests to ensure the oil has not absorbed moisture due to improper storage.
- Prior to refilling, drain a small amount of oil from the conservator. Then, align the oil filler with the filling port and add oil slowly, ensuring the oil level remains between 1/4 and 3/4 of the oil gauge.
- Oil refilling or replacement should be performed on dry, clear days using clean, dry containers. Never perform these operations during rainy or humid weather.
- Prevent oil shortage in the transformer. If the oil level falls below the transformer tank, the increased contact area between oil and air makes the oil more susceptible to absorbing moisture from the atmosphere.
- For large-capacity transformers, use breathers with desiccants to prevent moisture accumulation. For small-capacity transformers, appropriately raise the height of the oil pipe connecting the tank and the conservator inside the conservator to prevent moisture from entering the transformer body.
