Oil-Immersed Transformer Noise Standards

Oil-Immersed Transformer Noise Standards
Oil-immersed transformers can sometimes generate noise, producing various sounds. Especially in residential areas and communities, such noise can significantly impact people's daily lives and work. Generally, the sound produced by oil-immersed transformers during operation is not very loud, unless it is an older or damaged unit, which may generate more noticeable noise.
Noise disturbance from transformers at construction sites is a common issue, and courts have handled many similar cases. Therefore, the state has established noise standards for oil-immersed transformers. Any noise exceeding these standards is considered disruptive, and measures such as ceasing operation or relocating the transformer should be taken.
Oil-Immersed Transformer
Residential buildings should incorporate noise prevention measures in their layout and construction. According to standards, the allowable noise level in bedrooms and living rooms with windows closed is 50 dB(A) during the day and 40 dB(A) at night. Elevators should not be installed directly adjacent to bedrooms or living rooms. If unavoidable, effective sound insulation and vibration reduction measures must be implemented. Sound insulation should also be applied to pipe shafts, pump rooms, transformer rooms, and fan rooms, while pumps, transformers, and fans should be equipped with vibration reduction measures.
The noise from an operating oil-immersed transformer typically comes from both the unit itself and the cooling system. Thus, effective technical measures to reduce transformer noise should address both aspects. Currently, institutions such as the Building Physics Laboratory at Tsinghua University in China conduct noise testing for transformers.
  1. For transformer unit noise, reducing core vibration and minimizing noise emission can help control it. Additionally, vibration damping, sound insulation, and sound absorption measures can reduce noise during propagation.

  2. For cooling system noise, implementing controls to bring it close to or below the noise level of the transformer unit can effectively reduce overall noise.

Noise complaints related to oil-immersed transformers have been addressed in court disputes, with judgments based on the standards mentioned above. If noise levels clearly exceed these standards, it indicates a disturbance, and immediate action, such as halting operation or relocating the transformer, is necessary.
